Generation Gap?

I was having this conversation a few days back with my friends, where in my friend was in love and was all keen on getting married to the one in his life. And as in most cases, his parents were dead against it as she belonged to a different caste all together. Being the good friends that we were we joked, We argued, counter argued, we probed the situation, the pro’s the con’s and then from nowhere during the conversation one of the guys screamed out.. “Man! This is the problem with generation gap. Our parents never think the way we do”. And all nodded in perfect synchronization, which on any other day would have taken a dance master at least a week’s practice to get the synchronization rite.

“Generation Gap”… I often wonder if there is any relevance to this phrase. May be its jus’ different perspectives that we have. Not necessarily the way a generation thinks and the way they need to be branded. Not sure about the others, but coming to think of it, in many ways I still uphold the virtues and ideology that my parents have imbibed in me. And in that sense, most today will typecast me to be of an older generation…

In most cases, I don’t quite understand the reason as to why parents are generally against love marriages. They always have a rationale to it, which on most occasions sounds very unreasonable or unacceptable to us. May be it’s our age, our natural tendency to revolt, may be our short sightedness or maybe we are actually being pragmatic.. It could be any of the afore said reasons.

But then again, when I see myself few years down the line (hoping I ll live that long), when my son or daughter walks up to me and says the most dreaded words which parents I know sure hate.. I really don’t know how I would react. I am not quite sure if I ll behave the same as most parents do. Though I hold nothing against people falling in love(which I truly believe is a blessin’ and the best thing to happen in life) and getting married to their love, I am sure there are various factors which I ll come to play. So it’s evident it’s not gonna be a Happy Dad jumping around and saying a yes, it’s gonna be a more thoughtful and apprehensive dad fazal…

Won’t then my son/daughter for that matter may be even my friends say It’s all because of the generation gap?

I live by certain values in life and I am hope and pray to god that I for eternity live by it… I might not be against people who are for live-in-relationships, pre-marital sex, one-night stands, pub culture.. etcetera etcetera… But to me these are a taboo.. A strict NO.

Though I live in today’s world, I still live by the same values which my parents still uphold, and to me, we all live in the same generation. And by same generation, I mean same generation of thoughts….
